Word: Create a Hanging Indent

A hanging indent indents each line except the first line by the amount specified, as shown in the examples. They are most frequently used when creating lists and bibliographies.

EXAMPLE 2: Hanging Indent

Hanging Indent: The hanging indent feature indents the first line of the paragraph from the margin by the amount specified in the Left field. The amount in the Left field plus the amount specified in the By field indents all subsequent lines.

Create a Hanging Indent: Example 1

  1. Place the insertion point in the paragraph you want to indent, or select the paragraphs you want to indent.
  2. Choose the Home tab.
  3. Click the dialog box launcher in the Paragraph group. The Paragraph dialog box opens.
  4. Choose the Indents and Spacing tab.
  5. Click the down-arrow next to the Special field and then click Hanging.
  6. Type the amount by which you want to indent in the By field.
  7. Click OK. Word creates a hanging indent.

Create a Hanging Indent: Example 2

  1. Place the insertion point in the paragraph you want to indent, or select the paragraphs you want to indent.
  2. Choose the Home tab.
  3. Click the dialog box launcher in the Paragraph group. The Paragraph dialog box opens.
  4. Choose the Indents and Spacing tab.
  5. Click the down-arrow next to the Special field and then click Hanging.
  6. Type the amount by which you want to indent in the By field.
  7. Click the Tabs button. The Tabs dialog box opens.
  8. Type the amount by which you want to indent in the Tab Stop Position field.
  9. Make sure Left is selected in the Alignment area.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Place the insertion point after the word on the first line after which you want to indent.
  12. Press the Tab key. Word indents the first line.
