Change the Page Size

Word uses a default page size of 8 ½ in. by 11 in. and a default orientation of portrait. Depending on the type of document you are creating, you may want to change the page size and/or the page orientation.

Change the Page Size

Paper comes in a variety of sizes. In the United States, most business correspondence uses 8 ½ in. by 11 in. paper, the default page size in Word. You can use the Size gallery on the Page Layout tab to change the page size. The Size gallery has a long list of options, including options for envelopes. If none of these meets your needs, you can create a custom page size.

Change the Page Size

  1. Choose the Page Layout tab.
  2. Click the Size button in the Page Setup group. A gallery appears.
  3. Click the page size you want. Word sets your page size.

Customize the Page Size

  1. Choose the Page Layout tab.
  2. Click the Size button in the Page Setup group. A gallery appears.
  3. Click More Paper Sizes. The Page Setup dialog box opens.

  1. Choose the Paper tab.
  2. Click the down-arrow next to the Paper Type field and then click Custom Size.
  3. Type the width in the Width field.
  4. Type the height in the Height field.
  5. Click OK. Word sets your page size.

Page size sets the size of a printed page. It may or may not correspond to the size of the paper you are using. For example, if you are printing two pages on a single piece of paper, the page size will be smaller than the paper size.
