Correct Word’s Numbering

When creating a numbered list, Word either continues the previous list or starts a new list. The choice it makes may not be the choice you want. Additionally, when numbering, you may wish to skip a number. For example, you may wish to number 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. You can change the numbering by using the Set Numbering Value dialog box.

Change Starting Number

  1. Place the insertion point in the paragraph that has the starting number you want to change.
  2. Choose the Home tab.
  3. Click the down-arrow next to the Numbering button  in the Paragraph group and then click Set Numbering Value. The Set Numbering Value dialog box opens.
  4. Select Start a New List.
  5. Type the number you want to use to start the list in the Set Value To field.
  6. Click OK. Word starts the list with the number you entered.

Skip a Number

  1. Place the insertion point in the paragraph that has the value you want to change.
  2. Choose the Home tab.
  3. Click the down-arrow next to the Numbering button  in the Paragraph group and then click Set Numbering Value. The Set Numbering Value dialog box opens.
  4. Select Start a New List.
  5. Type the number you want to assign to the paragraph in the Set Value To field.
  6. Click OK. Word numbers the paragraph using the number you typed.

Tip

When you start numbering, the AutoCorrect button  may appear. Click the button and then click Continue Numbering to continue the previous list, or click Restart Numbering to start a new list.

Tip

A convenient way to correct Word’s numbering is to use the context menu: 1) Place the insertion point anywhere in the paragraph you want to renumber. 2) Right-click. The context menu and mini-toolbar appear. 3) Click the renumbering option you want. Click Continue Numbering to continue the previous list, click Restart At to start a new list, or click Set Numbering Value to open the Set Numbering Value dialog box.

Tip

You can use styles to create numbered lists. See Lesson 4.
