Show/Hide Nonprinting Word Characters

Certain characters, called nonprinting characters, will not appear in your printed document but do affect your document layout. You can elect to see these characters on the screen as you type or to have them remain invisible. For example, the end-of-paragraph marker marks the end of a paragraph and if you choose to have it display, appears wherever you press the Enter key.

Understanding Word Views

In Word, you can display your document in one of five views: Read Mode, Print Layout, Web Layout, Outline, and Draft. The Read Mode view formats your document in a way that makes it easier to read. The Print Layout view displays your document as it will appear when it is printed.

Word Panes and Contextual Tabs

As you use Word, you will encounter panes and contextual tabs. Panes are boxes that contain options. Selecting options in a pane is convenient. In Microsoft Word, some tabs, called contextual tabs, only appear when you need them. For example, the tabs you need to modify a table only appear when your insertion point is located within a table.
